What is a weighted blanket?
A weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like - a heavy blanket. The deep touch pressure from the evenly distributed weight of the blanket releases endorphins and allows for deep, restful sleep.
Don’t just take our word for it, there is plenty of medical research that has shown the calming benefits of sleeping under weight.
The science behind weighted blankets
The science behind weighted blankets is rooted in deep touch pressure therapy. Sleeping underweight releases endorphins and serotonin, otherwise known as happy hormones. Serotonin then naturally turns into Melatonin, the sleep hormone, which sends signals to your body and brain to relax and settle in for sleep.
As well as releasing calming and relaxing hormones, deep touch pressure keeps hormones that hinder rest at bay.
Cortisol, otherwise known as the stress hormone, can be significantly decreased through deep touch pressure, allowing your mind and body to further relax and surrender to sleep.

Weighted blankets don’t just help you get to sleep, they also improve the quality of your sleep and has a positive effect on insomnia. Deep touch pressure makes your body and muscles physically relax and release tension as if your entire body exhales deeply. The pressure then reduces tossing and turning throughout the night, allowing you to enter deep sleep that lasts longer.
Numerous studies have shown that sleeping with a weighted blanket can help reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Falling asleep faster and achieving deeper sleep for longer has resulted in people feeling better rested when they wake, giving them the energy and peace of mind to perform at their best. Which is something that is sadly lacking for most Australians with one in five people experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness.
Which weight is right for me?
The weight of your blanket will depend on your own weight. Weighted blankets should be at least 10% of your body weight in order to effectively achieve deep touch pressure.
Another thing to consider is the weight distribution of the blanket. Our blankets are naturally weighted with layered organic cotton and a small amount of lycra, handwoven into a chunky, luxe blanket that’ll not only give you your best sleep ever, it’ll look ah-maze-balls too.
Unlike blankets weighted with beads or sand, our woven design ensures the weight is always evenly distributed across the whole body, without applying uneven pressure. And it won’t leak sand grit into your bed. Or make your bed look…. we don’t want to say ugly, so we’ll say unfortunate

How to use your weighted blanket
Once you have your weighted blanket, you might be wondering how to use it. For beginners, it’s best to start slow. Test the blanket out while you’re just relaxing so that you can feel the sensation of its full weight.
On your first few nights of sleep, try covering only your legs with the blanket, then progress to covering half your body for the next few days before you completely cover your body with the blanket.
It’s important to allow your body to get used to the sensation gradually, as big, sudden changes can often confuse our bodies.
Take it slow and steady and test out your preferred way to use the blanket. Some ways you might like to try using it are either over or under your sheet, on top of a doona or on the couch when it is wrapped around you. As long as you are focusing on ensuring the weight of the blanket is on you not the bed or couch then you’ll get the maximum benefits from the blanket.
